This page lists general information about this website. To some extent it also explains how the website functions, what the various pieces of displayed information mean, and how to use them.
Philosophy
Most websites are created to allow the maximum number of viewers to access and be able to read through the website contents. This is especially true for business oriented websites, because otherwise they may lose valuable customers. This however is a personal website, and is funded privately. As a personal website, this site delivers a message to the world that is uniquely mine.
I embrace most new internet technologies. These tend to be inherently better structured, more flexible, more powerful and when used correctly, leave room for less error. By creating websites that are based on newer technologies, I aim to focus the internet public towards keeping with the latest standards and upgrading to the latest browsers available to them. Most internet browsers are available as a free download, so the only cost is the time it takes to download them. By conforming to newer standards and by making useful information available to the world through those standards, I in effect encourage people to use newer technologies.
Further, many internet browsers being developed today tend to support technology that is already a couple of years old. In a way they dictate the average technology level of all the websites around the world. This is somewhat disturbing to me because it is like leading a pig by its tail. Instead if many websites start supporting cutting edge technologies, then the browser making companies will be forced to include support for those technologies in their browsers. This makes internet technology more of a consumer-driven field than a corporate-driven one.
Finally, in the case of standards, it is difficult to determine whether standards are in fact useful and proper unless those standards are actually applied. Thus conforming to newer standards serves as a test bed for determining the better standards from the weaker ones, and helps improve the weaker ones.
This website is my attempt to realise the above rationale. It is built using very recent standards that are not yet widely used on the internet. However I have closely followed standards and guidelines set by the World-Wide-Web Consortium (W3C). Despite this, it is possible that your browser might not display pages on this website as intended. This is probably because standards usually take a while to filter down to mainstream browsers. However if you do experience any serious difficulties not related to browser compatibility, please inform the administrator.
Hit Counter
In the lower left corner of every registered page served from this website, you will notice two numbers displayed with a hyphen between them, like:
The former of the two numbers (3492) indicates the total number of times that particular webpage has been viewed by various people around the internet. If you try to refresh a webpage on this website, this is the number that gets incremented. Also if you browse to another page on this website without closing your browser, this number will change, corresponding to the total number of times that particular webpage has been viewed.
The latter number (164167) indicates the total number of internet sessions that have been served by this website to all visitors. This number is incremented the first time any webpage on this site is accessed. If you refresh or link to any page after that during the same session, this number will remain invariant. However if you close your browser window and start a fresh browser window, when you connect to this website this number will again be incremented by one.
Note that neither of the two numbers are incremented if the site is accessed by any of the author(s). Thus the numbers you see are purely external hits on the website.
